José L. Torero received his B.S. from Catholic University of Peru (1989), and his M.S. (1991) and Ph.D. (1992) from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the French National Center for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S.) in 1993. In 1995 he joined the faculty in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering where he is currently an Associate Professor. José L. Torero's main research interests are in the areas of combustion, fluid mechanics and heat transfer with specific application to fire, initiation, smoldering and flame propagation. His research work deals with the fundamental combustion issues related to fires and concentrates on fire safety in reduced gravity environments. The work José L. Torero conducted for NASA on smoldering polyurethane led to an experiment that flew on board of the Space Shuttle Columbia (USML - 1 mission). His ongoing research project on wall fires, with the European Space Agency, flew on board of a sounding rocket (Mini-Texus-6). Current projects include space and ground programs on material flammability screening for micro-gravity applications.
